First week at our internship

Our first week at Skipper Clement Skolen, we met our classteachers where we 're going to teach in. Silke is going to teach in stage 1 & Flore is going to teach in stage 2.  We are teaching in the international part of the school, what means we need to speak and teach in Enlish all the time. The childs are coming from all over the world. We have kids from India, Germany, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, South-Korea, France, US, Indonesia, Negeria,... There first language isn't English or Danish so it is hard for some kids to understand and communicate. They have English class each week, 9 blocks of 45 minutes. So they are learning English and are doing an amazing job. In stage 1 there were kids who couldn't speak and understand English, right now they are speaking it fluently even better than we do. In stage 2 most of the kids were in stage 1 the year before, some of them are new. I have 2 kids who are having a hard tme to understan and speak English, one coming from China and the other from Russia. We are translating instructions for them so they can understand what we were saying.

What we did the first week?

The first week we did observation in our classes, we watched, listened and participated. We enjoyed to get to know the kids and to be among the children. The day starts at 8:10 am at school & they end at 1:30 pm. Most of the kids are going home then, some of them stay at school. When they stay at school it's called SFO stand short for 'After School Activity Centres'. They are free in what they do, they just need to check in at the start of SFO & checkout when they are going home with their parents. They can choose an activity to do, in different places at the school with pedagogues.  After they end the schoolday we were going home and relaxed.

Second week or Emne Uge

Second week at our internship, this was the last week before the spring break. They had a topic week or how they say it in Danish 'Emne Uge'. It's a week about a specific topic, this year it was all about Greece. They choose Greece because the musical class from the Danish department we're going to play 'Mamma Mia' and the play is set in Greece. So that week was all about Greece, they learned a lot about Greece. The Danish & international department were mixed up with eachother.

In stage 1 they did some maths, art and sports. The sports they practiced were: long jump, horde jump and discus throw. In maths they needed to solve exercises and colour the right answer, target tag and learning about the medals. In the art activity they were making Greek vases.

In stage 2 they did some history, art, sports and writing. They learned about the history of the Olympics through a story and did some activities about it. Cause of the history of the Olypics they practiced some sports. They were practicing these sports: long jump, steps and car racing. In the writing class, they learned how to write their name in Greek. In the art activity they made a chariot, step by step.

First week of teaching

After a good break of 2 weeks we are back on track. Starting to teach in our classes in small groups.

Silke in stage 1

Silke is teaching small groups from 2 up to 6 kids. She was teaching the kids things about maths & English.

In maths she started to learn the kids about different diagrams: venn diagram,  carroll diagram and block diagram. The kids needed to get to know the diagrams and how to use them. They were drawing them and searching for information in the diagrams.

In English she was teaching about the table of content and how to form good sentences.

She took the art class on her own, it was about the colour monsters. The colour monsters were not known here, it's about the emotions. Each monster has a different colour. She learned the kids how to make orange, green and black. The kids needed to draw their own monsters and make the colours to paint them.

Flore in stage 2

Flore is co-teaching with the official teacher of stage 2 and was teaching a maths lesson & the art class.

In English Flore did  together with Sarah & Tandy the reading groups. The kids are split up in level groups for the reading. each monday the teachers are looking if they practiced the reading at home. They are learning about contractions, contractions are shortenings of words. For example: was not --> wasn't & it is --> it's. The other things they are doing in English that week are: reading comperhension in level groups, handwriting, information text about the table of content and making quetions out of a text they read in a book and a phonics game. The phonics game was prepared and introduced by Flore. The kids needed to pick a card, read the word out loud, think about what sound you hear in it, run to the holahoops and search for the right sound holahoop.

In Maths they learned about mass, time tables and division. Flore took the maths lesson about mass, she asked the kids what they know about it and did a little mindmapping in groups. After the introduction she gave intructions to do activities about mass. The activities are: balancing a scale, wheight different object on a digital scale, range things from lighest to heaviest, sort things heaviest & lightest and think about other things that are light & heavy. Afterwards their was a little reflection, what they like the most to do, what the hardest thing was,....

In the sience class the got an introduction about electicity through a story about blackout.

In global perspectives they got an introduction lesson about the soil. They went outside to examine the soil, how it looks, how it feels, what you can find in it,... They needed to fill in a report about that and there was a part where they had to draw the soil.

In the art class Flore took the whole class on her own. First I introduced the theme: spring, I read a book about how  a caterpillar turns into a butterfly and the beautifull colours. I showed them what the plan was, they needed to wrip a coffeefilter, colour it with markers in different patterns and spray with watter on it so that the colours can mix and splash all over the coffeefilter. When they were ready they needed to lay it on the dryingreck and clean up their place.

On wednesdays and fridays

We are going with stage 3 & 4 to the swimmingpool on wednesday afternoon, we needed to make up a lesson for the middle group in 5 minutes because one teacher was not at school. The kids are split up in levelgroups: good swimmers, middle swimmers (kids who can swim but not that good) and the starters.

On friday stage 1 & 2 have sports class, they needed to do a little warming up with a small workout video. the children were split up in groups to do rations of different sports. There was: dodge game, yoga, throw & catch and rope skipping. We did the rope-skipping part.

In PSHE what's short for personal, social, health and economic educadion, they did 'self show & tell'. Silke showed the kids 5 things who discribes herself and told the kids about it. The kids did this aswell.

In the English  she played a game to recognize words and teached the kids about fiction & non-fiction and did a test afterwards.

In the art class the kids got a small revision of last week for the kids who weren't there. It was about the colour monsters and mixing the basis colours to get the secondairy colours. If the mixed the colours, the kids needed to paint their self drawn monsters.  Silke was teaching the full class on her own.

In English she was taking a spelling test about the 'j' words, correcting it afterwards together with the kids. Sarah and I were doing the reading groups aswell  on monday. On thursday she was teaching the kids about information test. This was not an easy lesson, there was a revision in the first part of the lesson. They needed to read in groups a book and make 5 questions out of the information they read. I experienced that making question out of some information in a book was difficult fot the kids. Some were doing it better then the other pupils. Inbetween the 2 parts they got a little movement pauze. The second part of the lesson they needed to cut and glue the title, headings and subheadings in the right boxes in the text. On wednesday they did a phonics game with Flore about the different sounds in words, some handwriting and they did some reading and were tested about comperhension about it. They were learning about the contraction spellings aswell this week.

In global perspectives Flore was teaching them about (How important is the soil?'. First of there was a small revision about past week, after the revision she showed a short video about the soil, they watched it twice because afterwards there was a quiz. The kids needed to to do quiz in groups, they had to think about a groupname first. When every group had found a name we started the quiz and they did it very good.

In the art class Flore was taking the full class, she explained what bubble art is a showed them how to do it. The kids were so excited to do it on their own. They loved to do the bubble art, so did I watching the kids doing it. You need soap, paint or ecoline, a jar, a straw and an A3 (aquarell) paper to do it.

On wednesdays and fridays

We are going with stage 3 & 4 to the swimmingpool on wednesday afternoon, we needed to support the teachers and helping if it is needed.

On friday this week only stage 2 had sports, we were doing a target game called 'Fire & ice', 2 of the are the icicles and they need to touch the other kids. 2 kids from the fireteam have a ball to make the frozen fire alive by throwing and catching the ball. The frozen fire need to catch the ball. Flore teached them how to play baseball, at the ending they were getting how it works. Proud of myself and the kids, Ioved to teach them how to play it.

On the top the kids needed to plant a sunflowerseed. They were very excited during the activity.
